Study music is everywhere.
Piano playlists, lo-fi beats and slow jazz are built around a simple idea: put something calm in the background and make it easier to work.
There is some truth in that idea—but it needs an important qualifier.
Does music help you study?
Music can make studying feel easier, calmer or more engaging — but it does not reliably improve cognitive performance, and in some situations it can make performance worse.
A large systematic review covering 95 articles and 154 experiments found that background music tended to be detrimental overall for memory and language-related tasks, with music containing lyrics generally more disruptive than instrumental music and difficult tasks more vulnerable to interference (Cheah et al., 2022).
Another meta-analysis reached a more positive but still cautious result. Across 71 effect sizes from 47 studies, background music had a small average positive association with learning outcomes, but results were heterogeneous and varied with the learning context and study design (de la Mora Velasco et al., 2023).
That apparent conflict is the point.
The useful question is not simply “Does music help you study?”
It is:
What are you studying, what is the music doing, and what do you want the background to help with?
Three Musical Starting Points

Why the Research on Study Music Conflicts
“Studying” is not one cognitive task.
Reading a difficult paper, memorizing vocabulary, solving repetitive calculations, proofreading an essay and organizing notes all place different demands on attention and memory.
“Music” is not one stimulus either.
A familiar instrumental loop at low volume is very different from a new song with understandable lyrics, dramatic changes and a strong emotional pull.
Then there is the listener.
People differ in music preference, need for stimulation, noise sensitivity, familiarity, personality and baseline attention. The same soundtrack can therefore create a useful level of stimulation for one person and too much competing information for another.
The research becomes easier to understand when we separate two effects.
Music can support the listener
- reduce boredom
- improve mood
- make a long session feel easier to sustain
- provide a familiar work ritual
- reduce mind wandering in some settings
Music can compete with the task
- add linguistic information through lyrics
- consume attention
- introduce changes that capture attention
- interfere with verbal or visuospatial memory
- become more disruptive as the task gets harder
The same soundtrack can make a study session feel better while still adding information the task has to compete with.
Lyrics Are One of the Clearest Risks
If you are reading or writing in a language you understand while a singer is delivering understandable words at the same time, both streams contain linguistic information.
That creates a straightforward source of competition.
The systematic-review evidence is not perfectly uniform, but music with lyrics is more consistently disruptive than instrumental music for memory and language-related tasks (Cheah et al., 2022).
This does not mean every lyric instantly ruins concentration. It means that if the goal is to reduce avoidable interference, removing understandable lyrics is a sensible first move.

Task Difficulty Changes the Equation
Background music may be easier to tolerate during simple or repetitive work than during demanding tasks that already consume much of working memory.
That is consistent with the systematic-review finding that difficult tasks are more vulnerable to background-music interference (Cheah et al., 2022).

These are starting points, not scientifically optimal prescriptions.
Does Choosing Your Own Music Help?
It can.
In a 2023 experiment, self-selected background music increased reported task focus and reduced mind wandering during a visual vigilance task. The music condition also showed lower reaction-time variability than silence (Homann et al., 2023).
The most useful interpretation is not that favorite music makes you smarter.
It is that familiarity and preference can change how costly or supportive a background feels during sustained work.
A track you know well may demand less active monitoring than something novel. Music can also create a repeated cue that it is time to start working.
But self-selection does not erase task interference. A favorite song with prominent lyrics is still carrying language into a language-heavy task.
What Do Students Actually Choose While Studying?
Real-world listening habits provide another clue.
A 2025 study examining how students use background music while studying found that study music differed from everyday listening: students tended to choose music that was more instrumental, softer, slower and lower in energy, and they adjusted the music as task demands changed (Cheah et al., 2025).
That does not prove those choices improve grades.
It does suggest that students naturally reduce the amount of information in the soundtrack when they want music to function as background.
The practical pattern is intuitive:
As the task becomes more demanding, make the soundtrack less demanding.
Does Tempo Matter?
Tempo matters, but not enough to justify a universal “best BPM for studying.”
A 2024 within-participant experiment varied instrumental background music by tempo and emotional valence and found that performance effects depended on the task and the properties of the music rather than following a single faster-is-better or slower-is-better rule (Hofbauer et al., 2024).
Tempo is also only one dimension.
Two tracks at the same BPM can differ dramatically in:
- dynamic range
- event density
- rhythmic complexity
- melodic novelty
- instrumentation
- familiarity
- emotional salience
So a better question than “What BPM should I use?” is:
How much is this recording changing, and how often does it pull my attention away from the page?
Familiarity May Be More Important Than Genre
One useful study compared relaxing piano, jazz and lo-fi with a no-music condition in healthy adults.
The same study found changes in sustained attention and heart-rate variability across the three music groups, with no clear cognitive winner between piano, jazz and lo-fi.
There are reasons to treat the study cautiously. It was funded by Headspace, several authors were employed by Headspace, and the authors themselves noted limitations including the absence of an active music control and possible demand characteristics (Kirk et al., 2022).
Still, its familiarity result fits a useful practical idea:
A study playlist may work partly because you stop actively listening to it.
A constantly changing queue full of new songs may be more attention-grabbing than a familiar set of unobtrusive tracks.
Piano, Lo-Fi or Slow Jazz: Is One Actually Better?
The honest answer is no clear winner has been established.
Direct genre comparisons are rare, and many studies grouped under “music and cognition” use classical music, researcher-selected instrumental pieces, active musical training or completely different listening contexts.
Those findings cannot simply be rebranded as proof for piano, lo-fi or jazz study playlists.
The most useful way to compare these genres is therefore to separate what we reasonably know from what remains speculative.
Peaceful Piano
Why it makes sense as study music
Piano can provide melody and emotional tone without lyrics. Softer piano can therefore avoid one obvious source of interference while still making the study environment feel less empty.
What the evidence says
Piano was one of the three music conditions in Kirk et al.'s focus-music study, where the music groups showed changes in sustained attention and parasympathetic activity compared with the no-music condition (Kirk et al., 2022).
Broader research on instrumental and classical background music is mixed. Some meta-analytic evidence suggests small learning benefits in certain contexts, while systematic-review evidence finds many neutral or negative effects depending on the task (Cheah et al., 2022) (de la Mora Velasco et al., 2023).
What we cannot say
We cannot say piano is the best music for studying, and studies of piano training should not be treated as evidence that passive piano listening improves executive function.
Best practical interpretation: piano is a relatively low-linguistic-load musical background that may suit listeners who want calm without complete silence.

Lo-Fi for Studying
Lo-fi has possibly the strongest cultural association with studying of any modern background-music style.
Its usual ingredients are almost engineered for the role: repetition, restrained dynamics, instrumental or minimally vocal arrangements, soft beats and relatively little dramatic development.
What the evidence says
Lo-fi was included alongside piano and jazz in the Kirk et al. study, with no clear cognitive superiority between the three genres (Kirk et al., 2022).
A 2024 mixed-methods pilot study tested lo-fi music in 76 postgraduate young adults, followed by interviews with 27 participants. State anxiety decreased after the lo-fi exposure, and participants commonly described relaxation and interruption of intrusive thoughts (Dsouza et al., 2024).
That finding is relevant to studying because academic stress can itself interfere with concentration.
But the study was preliminary and examined state anxiety, not learning, grades or memory.
What we cannot say
We cannot say lo-fi has been proven to improve academic performance.
The scientific literature specifically testing lo-fi remains much smaller than its online popularity would suggest.
Best practical interpretation: lo-fi may be useful as a low-intensity, repeatable background for mood regulation and task engagement, but its reputation as a “brain-hacking” focus tool is ahead of the evidence.

Slow Jazz for Studying
Slow jazz sits somewhere between minimal study music and more attention-grabbing listening.
It can be instrumental and relaxed, but it can also contain more harmonic, rhythmic and melodic variation than simple piano or repetitive lo-fi.
What the evidence says
Jazz was the third genre in the Kirk et al. focus-music study. As with piano and lo-fi, the jazz condition was associated with changes in attention and heart-rate variability, but there was no differential cognitive effect establishing jazz as superior (Kirk et al., 2022).
That is currently more defensible than broad claims that jazz specifically “boosts brain power.”
What we cannot say
Evidence on slow jazz specifically is even thinner than evidence on jazz generally.
Research on jazz improvisation and the brains of trained musicians is interesting, but active improvisation is a fundamentally different activity from having jazz play quietly while reading.
Best practical interpretation: slow instrumental jazz may suit people who want more musical movement while still avoiding lyrics. Whether that movement helps or distracts depends strongly on the listener and the work.

The Genre Label May Matter Less Than Four Features
“Piano,” “lo-fi” and “jazz” are useful labels for humans.
But from the perspective of attention, the more important question may be what the recording is actually doing over time.
1. Lyrics
For reading, writing and memorizing verbal material, understandable lyrics add an obvious second stream of language.
2. Volume
The soundtrack should remain background. Increasing the level increases salience and can increase distraction.
3. Energy and change
Tempo alone does not determine distraction. Sudden changes, dense arrangements, pronounced transients and musical novelty can all pull attention toward the sound.
4. Familiarity and preference
Familiar or self-selected music may reduce mind wandering or make the session easier to sustain for some listeners (Homann et al., 2023) (Kirk et al., 2022).
This leads to a practical definition of study music that is more useful than a genre ranking:
Music that gives you enough stimulation to stay engaged, but not enough information to compete with the work.
When Silence Is Probably the Better Experiment
A site built around background audio should be clear about this:
Sometimes the most sensible study soundtrack is no soundtrack at all.
The strongest reason is difficult language- or memory-heavy work.
The Cheah et al. systematic review found that background music tended to harm memory and language-related performance overall and was more detrimental for difficult tasks (Cheah et al., 2022).
Another experiment found that background music affected verbal and visuospatial memory differently, reinforcing that “memory” itself is not a single uniform outcome (Echaide et al., 2019).
If you are trying to learn something genuinely difficult, silence is therefore an important baseline rather than an inferior option.
You can always add music later if it improves persistence without hurting performance.
A Practical Study-Music Protocol
Instead of searching for a universal “best study playlist,” use the research to remove obvious sources of interference.
For reading, writing or memorizing
- Start without lyrics.
- Keep the music clearly below conversational prominence.
- Prefer familiar material over constantly changing new tracks.
- If the task becomes harder, reduce the energy or remove the music.
- Compare your actual output, not only how focused you feel.
For repetitive or low-complexity work
- Use music if it helps you begin or stay engaged.
- Self-selected instrumental music is a reasonable starting point.
- A little more rhythm may be useful if boredom is the main problem.
If you keep getting distracted by the soundtrack
That is useful information.
Try silence, or move away from music entirely and compare it with a steady non-musical background.
