What is pink noise?

Pink noise is broadband noise whose power decreases as frequency rises — approximately 3 dB per octave in the idealized definition. Compared with white noise, this gives relatively more weight to lower frequencies and is often heard as softer or smoother.

Pink vs white vs brown noise

Pink noise sits between white and brown noise in spectral weighting: less bright than ideal white noise, but not as strongly weighted toward low frequencies as brown noise.

When might you choose pink noise?

Pink noise is a reasonable sound to test if white noise feels too bright but you still want a steady broadband background. Common uses include sleep, winding down, study and general background listening. Preference and context matter; the evidence does not establish pink noise as universally better than white or brown noise.
