White Noise

Consistent background sound for masking disturbances and supporting sleep.

What is white noise?

White noise is a broadband noise defined by approximately equal power at each individual frequency. Because higher octaves contain more individual frequencies, ideal white noise is usually perceived as relatively bright or hiss-like.

White vs pink vs brown noise

White noise is the brightest of the three common noise colors. Pink noise gradually reduces energy as frequency rises, while brown noise weights the low frequencies more strongly still.

When might you choose white noise?

White noise is a reasonable option to try when you want a steady, brighter background or when you want a broadband sound that may make irregular environmental noises less noticeable. People commonly use it while working, studying or sleeping, especially when the surrounding environment itself is distracting.

Preference matters — white noise does not improve sleep or focus for everyone.
